The Plague Doctor Glass Christmas ornament shows the foreboding of death in human form of Medieval plague doctors, typically medical doctors who were hired by cities to help treat citizens for the bubonic plague throughout the centuries. These physicians were hired to treat infected patients regardless of income, although their reputation varies when it came to extortion or ability. Rarely did anyone treated get well so some citizens saw their presence in the town as a warning of impending death.

Some doctors wore a special costume consisting of an ankle length overcoat and bird-like beaked mask. Apparently this mask was an attempt to purify the air they breathed but often doctors would perish along with patients.

Exact origins of the Plague Doctor costume are unclear but there are masked versions dating back to the 14th Century and the version we are most familiar with comes from engravings from 17th Century Rome.
