The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island, NY that depicts a classically draped woman holding a torch above her head with her right hand and in her left carries a tabula ansata which is inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776) which celebrates the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
Our Statue of Liberty New York Premium Blown Glass Ornament is a tribute to this beautiful gift to America and symbolizes our right to be a free people. It measures 4 1/4" H x 2" wide and is exquisitely handpainted to look like the bronzed copper statue on Liberty Island.
The sculpture was given to America as a gift from the people of France. It was designed by Auguste Bartholdi and the metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886. The proposal, however, was made much earlier in 1865 and meant to commemorate the upcoming centennial in 1876 but was delayed due to war in Europe. The torch bearing arm, however, was completed in time to tour the Centennial Exposition in 1876 in Philadelphia.
